2017 Seoul UIA Workshop + exhibition : Bio-digital as soul of the City

Toward complex design

The international Bio-digital movement develops on a Franco-Korean axis. It brings together academics and creatives. These specialists reconcile new methods of scientific analysis, and new approaches to creation and planning. They want to meet the new demands of populations and to satisfy our new global constraints.

This movement is interested in new methods of constitution / re-constitution of the real and of realities, which are proposed by digitals and biologicals.

How can parameterization, algorithmic, ecosystem, and self-organization extend and enrich project approaches in the fields of architecture, town planning, landscape, agriculture, governance, art, sustainable development ? That is the central question. We have to examine new project approaches.

Within this movement, the « Bio-digital Architects » study how advanced sciences and technologies (complexity, digital sciences) influence the ways of working, of pooling, of inventing, of building, of organizing and re-organizing our living environment.

The « 2017 Paris-Seoul bio-digital City » workshop : Architecture and Digital Soul of the city

The workshop will last august 27th – september 04th, in the Seoul Science Center.

On this occasion, we will search how the « Digital Soul of the City » can enrich our architectural, artistic, philosophical and social cultures.

Social networks, transport monitoring data, urban memories stored and shared on the Internet, are digital expressions of the soul of the city. The latter is part of a materiality and is therefore both real and virtual, instantaneous, able to record the history and to predict evolutions.

Big data, numerical methods, new ways of communicating give rise to new cultures, new ways of organizing society, work, leisure.

This new « urban, architectural, biological and human soul » is filtered by algorithms. It enlarges both the soul experienced by each person and the « collective soul » of all users.

The city must be a place that brings together and hybridises these cultures with the cutting edge techniques, to put them at the service of its users.

In the Soul of the city, the Bio-digital Movement seeks harmonious reconciliations between mankind and city, between mankind and nature but also between people.

The Experimental Laboratory of the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie (Paris), partner of the workshop

This Laboratory brings together the ADIK (Seoul and Daegu) and the International Experimental Studio for Bio-digital City (Paris). It experiments new methods of organization applied to land-use planning. Workshops are regularly organized in Paris and Seoul.

The workshops are led by Seungnam Baek, Claire Bailly, and Jean Magerand, all architects, researchers and teachers in schools of architecture.

Since 2012, this Experimental Laboratory brings together international teams of young researchers from all academic, inventive and technical fields : architects, ecologists, sociologists, biologists, agronomists, mathematicians, philosophers, landscapers, roboticians, computer theorists, economists, health specialists, etc.

The projects of the Laboratory are bio-digital ie they are first ecological and sustainable. Then they use digital, big data, optimization by computer and, generally speaking, the most advanced technologies.

Territorial algorithmics, spatial modeling, parametrized optimization, complex structural data, methodical ecosystem, self-organized co-working, collaborative solidarity, complex pooling, organizational bio-mimicry, agronomic self-organization, are experimented in these « bio-digital » projects.

In order to achieve its goals, the Laboratory identifies new methods, new materials, new techniques, new know-how and new ways of life. They assemble all of them in complex planning projects.

Young researchers use, value and cross the most advanced technical, scientific, industrial and sociological knowledge in urban, architectural or agricultural projects. The objective is to design, to experiment, to build and to manage cities, buildings, agricultures, with optimizing and innovative methods.

Through the use of digital technology, researchers produce self-organized and intelligent urban prototypes, models of hyper-recycling cities, algorithmic architectures, bio-optimized agriculture, micro-economic systems, mutualised and self-solidary social deals, urban and robotic agricultures, optimized high-rise buildings, multi-use housing cells, bio-boosted biodiversity spaces, self-sufficient and self-recycling vertical farms, permaculture macro-farms, solidary and mutualised associative organizations.

The exhibition of bio-digital artworks, another way to consider the digital soul of the city

In parallel to its work on urban planning, architecture and landscape, the Experimental Laboratory has set up « artistic teams » who produce complex « bio-digital » works. The latter re-interpret, in the field of art, the methods and inventive approaches tested in the territorial fields.

The artistic teams bring together an architect, an artist and digital specialists (computer scientists, mathematicians, roboticians).

They produce bio-digital art works, all made from the same specifications.

All of these approaches and projects were presented in the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie throughout their development. The public was able to interact with researchers and designers.

The art works will be exhibited in the Seoul City Hall during the workshop.

Towards new skills of the architect

Bio-digital architects are studying how architecture should integrate new ways of organizing the city and housing in this context. They are experimenting with new methods to develop this « Digital Soul of the City« .

Architects are able to feel, to understand this soul of the city. They can specifically use digital tools to better analyze and re-invent what the « augmented soul of the city » can become.

The workshop and the exhibition will highlight the architects’ proposition skills in society ; they are able to use the best tools, methods and techniques. They know how to build and develop even better with these tools and make more pleasant living environments.

The Movement for Bio-Digital Architecture launches a new debate

On the occasion of the September workshop in Seoul, conferences will bring together French and Korean bio-digital architects. Their presentations will help to understand how to better grasp digital technology to install new life environments.

During the congress, we hope that the young participants in the workshop will discuss their work with the public and with the congress architects in order to gather opinions and criticisms, in order to show their new methods and in order to exchange ideas.

The aim is to create a forum for debate between architects on the theme of foresight and the future of architects’ know-how.

At an international level

Beyond the UIA congress in September, the « bio-digital architects » movement wants to create a debate on the new modernization of our professional know-how.

Now, the architects production must accompany this mutation of the creation that digital and data mining carry. As in the beginning of the 20th century, architects must spearhead social and societal experimentation.

Bio-digital architects want to bring together all the creative energies to show thattechniques avant-garde are not necessarily alienating and inhuman methods ; they can be used to invent cities and architectures more pleasant to live and more respectful of natural environments.

We invite architects from all countries to join our French-Korean reflections in order to engage in a major international debate on all these subjects.
